Johanna Morariu, M.A.Johanna Morariu, Director
Director
jmorariu [at] innonet [dot] org | 202-728-0727 x103

Johanna is a fierce believer in the power of the nonprofit sector to improve people’s lives, and the role of the nonprofit sector as innovator, experimenter, and advocate for effective approaches to societal challenges. In her work, she seeks to magnify the impact of her partners by providing timely, high-quality information to bolster decision making.

In her more than five years with Innovation Network, Johanna has worked with many different types of organizations, including funders, direct service organizations, and advocacy organizations. Recent and past projects include:

In addition to her consulting work, Johanna also manages Innovation Network’s research. She led the development of Evaluation Capacity Building: Funder Initiatives to Strengthen Grantee Evaluation Capacity & Practice (2011), State of Evaluation 2010: Evaluation Practice and Capacity in the Nonprofit Sector (2010), Effective Advocacy Evaluation: The Role of Funders (2009) in Foundation Review, the Pathfinder: A Practical Guide to Advocacy Evaluation series (2009), and Speaking for Themselves: Advocates' Perspectives on Evaluation (2008).

Within the field of evaluation, Johanna’s niche interest is data visualization. Her interests range from high tech (e.g., figuring out how to apply new tools to the evaluation of nonprofit work—and teaching nonprofits how to use the tech), to low tech (okay, mostly just pie chart humor).

Johanna is an active member in the American Evaluation Association, especially in the Advocacy and Policy Change Topical Interest Group (TIG) and the Data Visualization and Reporting TIG. Before coming to Innovation Network, Johanna worked at MetaMetrics, Inc., where she worked on Monitoring and Evaluation projects for USAID. Additionally, she was a Graduate Research Assistant at the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), the Department of Justice’s research, development, and evaluation agency. Johanna has been an instructor at George Mason University, where she taught research methods.

Johanna received her B.A. in International Relations and History from Penn State University and her M.A. in Political Science from George Mason University. When not evaluating or laughing from pie chart humor, she can most likely be found applying her energies to cooking or camping—and sometimes both at the same time!
